The second movie hitting theaters on Friday, Dec 2, 2011, is 'I Am Singh'. This is directed by actor Punit Issar who played villain Duryodhan in Mahabharat serial. Since he strongly felt the Sikhs were discriminated by the Whites in the US and Europe following 9/11, he decided to make a movie on the glorious past of the brave Sikh community. Hence, this is a movie made with a purpose.Ranveer Singh played by Gulzar Inder Chahal is a young Punjabi businessman whose brothers live in America. No sooner, he learns about the murder of one of his brothers than he rushes to the US. However, he gets the shock of life to know that his other brother is held by the US police for their brother's murder.
He gets anxious to know about the intrigue behind one of his brother's murder and the consequent arrest of his another brother. Luckily, Pakistani Rizwan Haider played by Rizwan Haider reveals that the US police favors the racists and wants to hush up the murder case. Ranveer decides to approach the higher ups. He is doubly lucky to find Fateh Singh played by Puneet Issar who has been an LAPD officer until recently, to help him. They come across a beautiful attorney and human rights activist named Amelia White played by Hollywood's Brooke Johnston. They file a petition in the American court for justice.
The movie has a just cause but its story is weird taking it nowhere. Hence, the actors don't have proper roles to play. The director is to blame for it as he is always occupied in his acting role and thus ignores his directorial job.The movie centers around Fateh Singh (Puneet Issar) than Gulzar (Ranveer). Why the hell Fateh is often found delivering lessons? Thus, director Punit creates a kind of confusion by relating all the problems of Sikhs with post 9/11 period. Wish Puneet had concentrated on his real job of direction, script and screenplay, which have suffered a lot.
Anyway, the guest appearances of famous Punjabi singers likes of Daler Mehndi and Mika lend huge support to the movie. Daler's bhangra is as usual entertaining. The songs help entertain the audience though they are unable to make up the shortcomings of the script and the screenplay.A good cause gets lost because of wrong approach of the actor-turned-director Puneet Issar.
