Dubbed paradise on Earth or the Switzerland of the East, Kashmir was once India's holiday playground, sold partly by the hundreds of top movies filmed there.

Generations of Indians grew up watching their favorite stars singing and dancing in meadows, cavorting in the Himalayan snows or snuggling in shikaras. But then started the militancy as both film makers and tourists deserted the region.

However, with the valley showing signs of peace, shooting of films has resumed. The trend started by Boney Kapoor for his film "Pukar" and Ashok Pandit for his film "Sheen", is now being followed by director Sanjeev Puri, who has shot most of his movie "Agnipankh" at the airbases in Pune and Srinagar.

Starring Jimmy Shergill, Rahul Dev, Shamita Shetty, Divya Dutta, and Samir Dharmadhikari in the main leads, "Agneepankh" is based on the professional and personal lives of three Indian Air Force pilots.

Model turned actor Samir Dharmadhikari, who will be seen in his second film after Madhur Bhandarkar's "Satta", said the situation in the region is quite peaceful for shooting.Samir plays one of the pilots in the film.

"Before going to Srinagar, we were a bit tense. We had been hearing about stories about Kashmir in the media. But when we landed in Kashmir, it was pretty peaceful. The Kashmiris were great and helpful. The locals, the army guys, the airforce people, they guided us in the right way," he said.

Shamita Shetty, known for her sizzling song-and-dance sequences in "Mohabbatein" and "Mere Yaar Ki Shadi Hain", plays the character of Anjana, a patriotic chopper pilot, in the film."It is not a typical heroine kind of role with routine song and dance numbers. You could almost say, she is like a fourth hero in the film. She is completely tomboy. She is someone who always gives importance to the call of the country," Shetty said.

Director Sanjeev Puri, who earlier made a Television program titled "Tujh Pe Dil Kurban" and now makes his directorial debut in Bollywood with "Agnipankh", said every unit member of the film was prepared for the dangers involved in shooting at Kashmir.

"I had not forced any of my unit members to go to Kashmir. They all knew the dangers involved in shooting there. A lot of them even withdrew at the last moment due to the dangers involved. So I had to replace them. So I believe my unit, which comprised of around 100-150 members, went fearlessly to Kashmir to open its doors to the rest of the world. I am extremely happy about this fact," he said.

Interestingly, "Agnipankh" which initially started as a Television serial, was later developed into a film by its producers Dhilin Mehta and Seema Kar.
