Bollywood dons a new hat and in Bollywood dawns a new era with the release of ‘The Dirty Picture’ on Friday, Dec 2, 2011. Producer Ektaa Kapoor had already proved herself with bold movies, but ‘The Dirty Picture’ will leave an indelible mark! Ekta has surprised the entire industry with this flick starring Vidya Balan, Emraan Hashmi and Naseeruddin Shah in major roles, script & dialogues by Rajat Arora and brilliant direction by Milan Lutharia. The older Indian cinegoers would have never ventured to believe of such a biopic on the big screen. The movie is indeed a tribute to late south sexy siren Silk Smitha, or rather a recreation of her era.

In the movie, Chirag played by Chirag Paswan (son of politician Ram Bilas Paswan) shares his vacations between his separated parents - mother Shalini played by yesteryear beauty queen and actress Poonam Dhillon and father Ahluwalia played by Kabir Bedi. Each parent has its own demands and dreams for Chirag and he hangs between the two. Father wants Chirag to be a top tennis player and marry his long-standing Bhatinda friend's village daughter. In contrast, mother wants him to be a top businessman and marry her friend's daughter who just returned from London. No one asks Chirag!

The story is of Vidya playing a junior artist Reshma (meaning Silk in Hindi) and named after late actress Silk Smitha and her movie ‘Reshma Ki Jawani’. An older Naseeruddin Shah plays matinee idol Suryakant. Vidya spins around, licks lips and thrusts hips around him in an effort to induce him to work with her but ends up seducing him to sleep with her. Vidya’s wit floors him; instance – he tells her he’s had 500 women before, to which she quips back asking if he had the same woman 500 times!! Naseer is amazed with her presence of mind. She wins Nasser’s brother Ramakant played by Tusshar Kapoor, who also falls for her.

Proud Vidya has no hesitation in saying that those who call her ‘dirty’ during the day are too happy with her during the darkness of night. Her dialogues with Nasser’s wife and her rival dancer are remembered and repeated by the audience. Thus, Vidya shoulders the movie with her extraordinary sensuality and uninhibited frankness, but most importantly without any indecency despite showing off a lot of her lovely cleavage in the film. She is ably supported by brilliant performances by her co-stars - Nasser and Emraan - plus dialogues written by Rajat Arora and excellent direction of Milan, in her challenging job.

Vidya’s item number ‘Ooh la la’ is superb and its credit goes to Bappi Lahiri. The sequences pertaining to Vidya seducing Naseeruddin Shah, her encounter with Emraan Hashmi, outside filmi jurno Anju Mahendroo’s house are noteworthy.Vishal-Shekhar’s soundtrack gels well with Bappi Lahiri and Shreya Ghoshal’s rendering. Pony Prakash Raj’s choreography, Bobby Singh's cinematography and Niharika Bhasin Khan’s costume designing lend complete support to the movie. Performances of Tusshar as Nasser’s brother, Anju Mahendru as filmi jurno and Shivani Tanskale as Naseer’s wife are remarkable too.

Overall, ‘The Dirty Picture’ is enchanting and definitely worth watching.
