Two movies released this Friday, February 19, 2010, and both are low budget and relatively small. The first one we talk about is ‘Click’. This one is in the category of horror films, but it provides more laughter than scare! One recalls Bollywood of 70’s and 80’s when Ramsay produced horror movies, albeit with comic relief. Then there are filmmakers like Ram Gopal Varma and Mahesh Bhatt who have not too long ago attempted horror movies – scaring audiences with their use of latest technology and sound effects. ‘Click’ misses that. We wonder how drawing more laughter than the scare could fall into the horror film genre? So, ‘Click’ neither falls in the category of horror nor comic genre.

The title ‘Click’ is quite apt inasmuch as the movie moves around a photographer. The character Avi is played by Shreyas Talpade, and his model girlfriend Sonia played by Sada of the ‘Love Khichdi’ fame. In the movie, they are busy in a fashion shoot and on a dark night both leave for the jungle. As the story goes, their car rams into a girl and strange things start to happen. Doors bang, lights flicker and the chalk-colored lady ghost played by Sneha Ullal even makes an appearance across the window of a moving car! The ghost is none other than Shreyas’ college sweetheart. Shreyas and their romance went awry. She seemingly comes to haunt his present and seeks her pound of flesh from Shreyas who refuses to get serious after a one-night stand! A trek back to the past! It is another matter that Sneha fails to create a scare. This failure could be attributed to director Sangeeth Sivan, who reveals too much, too fast.

Sivan doesn’t have the experience of making horror movies though he had successfully directed ‘Apna Sapna Money Money’ and ‘Kya Kool Hai Hum’ in the past. Sivan also fails in providing any (now expected) state-of-the-art special effects coupled with images of the ghost walking upside down on the ceiling or climbing head downwards, from a ladder. Sorry, no chills down the spine here! Well, the story continues with some panic, where Avi and Sonia both leave for the jungle. Since Avi’s photos carry a mysterious white fog, they approach psychic-writer played by Chunky Pandey.

Is she a ghost? No, she is just seen in photographs only. So whenever the couple wants to see her, they pick up a Polaroid camera and click to locate the spirit. Wonder if the movie is a copy of the 2008 English movie ‘Shutter’, which was also a remake of an earlier Thai film. In short, ‘Click’ comes across as neither a horror movie nor a technically successful mix of both comic and scare. It just miserably fails both as a ghost or a human form of horror.

In terms of acting, Shreyas Talpade performs excellent as ever, and Sada lends good support to him. The weakest link in the movie is Sneha Ullal, who debuted in Bollywood’s ‘Salman Khan starrer movie as a look alike of Aishwarya Rai. Technically, the film is at the lowest ebb. This is presumably due to the director’s lack of experience in the making horror. On the whole, save your bucks!
