Time has come a full circle with producer Romesh Sharma himself getting the megaphone in his hands to make a launch pad for his son Karan. Romesh Sharma passed out with Film And Television Institute of India as a junior to Jaya (Bhaduri) Bachchan and later struggled to become an actor in films like 'Parinay', 'Aalingan', 'Sunehra Sansar', 'Sajji Rani', 'Lal Chunariya' and others.

He also did brief roles in films like 'Hum' and 'Shararat'. Significantly, he produced a super duper hit of Amitabh Bachchan in 1991, when Big B needed it most. Before 'Hum', Romesh had produced a film named 'Aitbaar' in 1985. Now, after 20 years since his first film, Romesh has made 'Dil Jo Bhi Kahey' for his son and released it today despite the fact that most of the producers in Bollywood stay away from releasing their films during the Shraddh period.

This strategy may be to avoid any competition at box office. However, business has not been very good for Hindi films for the last two months or so post-'Mangal Pandey-The Rising'. While 'Dil Jo Bhi Kahey' is a directorial debut for Romesh Sharma, it is a debut for Karan as an actor. Similarly, British model and actress Annabelle also makes her debut in Bollywood with this film.

'Dil Jo Bhi Kahey' revolves around Jai (Karan Sharma) who has been brought up in Mauritius in an Indian family. He is sent to Stockholm for studies. Instead of concentrating on his studies, he falls in love with a blonde Sophie (Annabelle Wallace) and wants to turn it into a relationship. Amitabh Bachchan plays Jai's father Shekhar. He is an open-minded man and has witnessed the world changing over the year. He understands how to deal with the grown up kids. When he learns about his son's love, he considers it as normal, but Jai' mother Sandhya (Revathy pitched first time against Amitabh Bachchan) is not so liberal in her thoughts.

She believes in tradition and cannot think of a foreign girl becoming her daughter-in-law. Seeing the turbulence at home, Jai decides to sacrifice his love for the sake of family and agrees to marry an Indian girl (Bhumika Chawla). The love story turns into a love triangle and equations change . Meanwhile, Jai's fiancé learns about the love between Jai and Annabelle and decides to back out so that the real lovers could meet.

The very basic problem with 'Dil Jo Bhi Kahey' is its treatment. Romesh Sharma knowingly or unknowingly has taken so many tasks on his head. The film starts losing its grip on its viewers even before it has properly set in. The lovers drift away within the first half an hour of the film and for this only Romesh Sharma is to blame as he has written the story . Wonder how Tanveer Khan helped him? The weakest link of the film is its story narration. Romesh has also taken help of renowned cinematographer and director Lawrence D'Souza as films' Executive Producer.

The film is rich in visuals thanks to cinematography by Binod Pradhan and Gopal Shah. And, even choreographer Bosco and Caesar have tried to keep the feet tapping. Raju Sundaram and Saroj Khan also get their share of choreography in the film. Music by Shankar Ehsaan and Loy gels with the mood of the film, but has not been promoted well across the music channels. This unplanned publicity has affected the opening of the film. Editors -- Anil Kumar Bonthu and Rasshi Ganeriwal -have failed to chop off at least half an hour duration during the first half before the actual family drama sets in.

'Dil Jo Bhi Kahey' could have been a nice launch pad for Karan Sharma had the film was made by some young director. The very essence of a love story needed to be modern instead of following the old AVM or Prasad Productions' kind of formula. Karan's character has not been sketched properly and his heroism is completely lacking. Even in the climax the main task for the lovers, unison, is done by others.

However, Karan leaves his impression in his debut film and if he gets some good roles he can hope for a future in Bollywood. Annabelle is going to be just one film wonder and not many offers may fall in her lap after this movie. As, Karan's friend Manoj Gulati has excelled and needs applause. For Amitabh Bachchan, these kinds of roles are a routine . He does his role with ease and, so is Revathy in an orthodox character. On the whole, 'Dil Jo Bhi Kahey' is a loser at box office and does not have even average prospects.
