Toronto-based Indian director Deepa Mehta's Oscar nominated film 'Water' which depicts the pathetic conditions faced in the 1930s by Indian widows because of obscurantist ideology has thrilled the entire world. Deepa Mehta has been always an honest and truthful director which can be seen through her films like 'Fire', 'Earth' and others. In 2000 when Deepa was shooting this film in Varanasi, she met with strong agitation on the part of saffron activists.
Deepa didn't lose her heart and shifted the location to Sri Lanka in 2003. Deepa doesn't conceal the truth and always tries her level best to bring out the reality. The smash its team met with her on the eve of the release of 'Water' in New Delhi.
Excerpts of her chat:
What difficulties you faced during shooting in Canada or Banaras?
It is a love story and I tried my level best to show the problem of Indian widows during the 1930s. Some activists unnecessarily made it controversial but the film shows our history
What's your message?
It is a real incident-based movie and no one should miss it.
Did you try to reveal India of 1930s?

Yes, the movie is fully based on the history of India. There are still lots of complexities in the country and I have shown the Indian trend of mind.
What made you make this movie?
I got inspiration from what I see in the day to day life.
Why is the movie set in 58 years back?
This film not only traces back to 58 years but it also exhibits the sufferings faced by Indian women in rural as well as urban areas.
