Yash Raj Films' 'New York' that hit theaters worldwide last Friday (June 26), has already collected Rs 350 million in its three-day first weekend. Thus, the movie has broken all the past opening weekend collection records for the year 2009, according to a Yash Raj Films press note. Similarly, Yash Raj Films had also collected the highest revenue film their opening weekend of 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi' in 2008. Incidentally, 'New York' has opened at the third slot on the Australian charts and at the tenth spot in the UK this weekend. The movie has also been the top weekend earner in the UAE for 2009, the press note adds.

This shows that the long standing drought of films has not only ended but a new era for the film industry has ushered in. Next Friday (July 3), another much-hyped and long-awaited big movie starring Akshay Kumar opposite queen B of Bollywood Kareena Kapoor titled 'Kambakkht Ishq' will release, giving further relief to the film-starved Hindi audience. This is likely to attract much larger audience, and might exceed gross revenue of even 'New York' that opened the previous Friday (June 27). The coming Fridays will bring in more and more exciting movies, likes of Imtiaz Ali's 'Love Aaj Kal', Neeraj Vora's 'Shortkut - The Con is On and 'Kaminey' to cheer up the audience as well as the cinema employees who have witnessed almost empty halls during the past three months after the standoff between big producers and multiplex owners over revenue sharing and costing a huge loss of over Rs 300 crore.
