Despite the winter, chill ‘Don2’ seems set to draw large crowds and might dominate the box office for a while. This solo Bollywood release in India on Friday December 23, 2011, was an eagerly awaited Shah Rukh Khan starrer. The first day’s turnout was mostly youth who called ‘Don 2’ a better flick that the Badshah’s previous film, Ra-One. Most coming out of the theaters raved the roles played by SRK, Priyanka Chopra and Boman Irani.
The movie revolves around two characters. Vidyadhar Acharya played by Vinay Pathak, who has just moved from Benares to Mumbai. Mehak Malavde played by Neha Dhupia, a chorus dancer, from Kolhapur, outside Mumbai. Mahek and Vidyadhar are neighbors but soon turn roommates after Mehak is evicted for being an illegal occupier. Vidyadhar, a salesman in a private pharmaceutical company, also hires a room in the same colony in Mumbai illegally, but escapes unscathed. Mehak works as a backup dancer in films, forces herself into Vidyadhar's apartment. As the luck would have it, they finally turn friends. Mehak continues with her glamour career.
This version of ‘Don’ (aka Mafia boss) revolves around him (SRK) planning a monumental heist of stealing currency plates of the ‘Euro’ from a high security vault in Berlin. He seeks the help of Boman Irani playing Vardhan. Piggy Chops plays a cop who’s constantly on their heels. This sequel to King Khan’s earlier ‘Don’ has a vivid canvas that spreads over Thailand, Malaysia, Zurich and Berlin. Bollywood’s doing action a la Hollywood! Locale photography is absolutely charming and is topped only by Shah Rukh playing a haughty and lively daredevil.
In the story, Don (SRK) resurfaces in Thailand to surrender to cop Roma (Chops) to be sent to a Malaysian prison. He braves an escape with a jailbreak, aided by his old rival Vardhan. There begins the saga as Don plans the heist of stealing German currency plates. As is the one-liner in the movie, Don claims nothing is impossible, other than catching him! ‘Don 2’ highlights are the extraordinary sequences of breaking the jail, stealing the currency plates from Berlin bank and the car chase between SRK and Cop Chops.
It wouldn’t be misplaced to say that the ‘Don 2’ stunts are probably the first for a Bollywood flick – a leap from such a high-rise building!Shah Rukh is slowly moving away from his hitherto romantic image that’s totally missing in ‘Don2’. Though, a few sequences between SRK and Lara Dutta on the one hand between SRK and “Jungle Billi (wild cat) – as Don calls her in the movie” Piggy Chops are reminiscent of Bollywood romance. Technically, the movie is fantastic. It has been made in D2 and D3 forms. The lead cast is superb. The script is very well written and so are its dialogues. Some of the dialogues are already on the lips of the viewers. Only the music is average and falls below expectations from the Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy trio.
Get out and get some thrill! Two thumbs up for ‘Don 2’.
